There are any number of very good reasons to be cautious about AI. However, I suspect that there is more to Yudkowsky's proposal than meets the eye. The fact that it was published in TIME is intriguing.

The US is in a high-tech arms race with Russia and China and STEM in the US is in a very difficult position. Raising anxieties about AI is one way of managing public opinion, which is vital for regulating R&D policy.

Yudkowsky's proposal probably suits the current interests of one or more party within the high-tech R&D sector. A pause (most unlikely to be implemented by gov't fiat, but you never know) would presumably fit in with a planned restructure of the institutions involved or something like it. Or it might be designed to raise public anxieties or suspicions about Chinese high tech in communications and/or computing.

No one really knows the full story. It is possible that the powers that be are egging on the Democrats in order to guarantee Trump remains a viable candidate for the presidency. Public sympathy will guarantee that Trump wins the Republican nomination. The charges are a nuisance only...they are so poorly constructed that the trial will most likely end in an acquittal. If not, they are guaranteed to be vacated on appeal. Trump is in neither personal nor political danger from any of this.

The Democrats are piling fuel on the funeral pyres of their own top people who need to be removed ASAP to maintain the long-term viability of the regime. State and county DAs all over the Red States will now target the Bidens and various others. The charges will mostly be minor stuff and will cover crimes that do not direct the attention of the public towards anything that the Deep State needs to keep secret. The process will serve to disable the careers of the villains. It will inspire many early retirements.

This is what a purge in the age of reality TV looks like. Politics is fake and ghey but it absorbs the attention of opinionated people who might otherwise disrupt the orderly operation of society. The psychic cost of the Trump show-trial will be paid by the constituencies that have a deep need for dignified government. This need is keenly felt only by certain strata.

Trump remains a viable candidate and will win an election if inflation gets worse. A second Trump presidency will be billed as the great opportunity for reform, but the price Trump will pay for the White House in 2024 will be to pull his punches as required.

The amusing (or tragic) thing about all of this is that it could have been avoided had Biden had the sense to trust his instincts.

Immediately after the election he should have invited Trump to the White House, asked his advice, named an airport after the 45th president and given Jared, Ivanka or Donald Jr. an ambassadorship. Jan 6 could have been avoided.

I blame Obama for the poor strategic thinking and Hilary for the rancour. The Swamp is what it has always been, but good form is best. IMHO.

I hope China lands the Ukraine rebuilding contract.

A strong Chinese presence in rebuilding Ukraine would be absolutely hilarious, but I don't think that they would be given anything more than a token amount, just enough to try and tease them away from Russia (still won't work).

Expand full comment

Regardless of which companies get which contracts the amount of construction equipment manufactured in China is enormous. When the rebuilding finally starts keep an eye out for ZOOMLION and XCMG logos.

I also don't see the USA/EU bloc paying for anything eastwards of the eventual ceasefire line so China will be getting a lot of that work. North Korean construction brigades in Ukraine would be absolutely hilarious.

Even funnier...prison labour by captured NATO forces.

There are plenty of Europeans and North Americans in Ukrainian uniform. The Russians consider them mercenaries, not legitimate combatants covered by the Geneva convention.

After WW2 the Soviets used POWs from the Axis for rebuilding work. There is no reason to think that Russia would not apply a comparable approach today.

China has/had some major investments in eastern Ukraine. But the value of the relationship with Russia is inestimably more important.

Expand full comment

Yeah, so here's the thing though, they have bought up almost all the condemned property in Syria for pennies on the dollar and are just waiting, eagerly, for the sanctions to let up so that they can start getting international (both government contracts and private investment) funds to do all or most of the rebuilding.

Good. If China has skin in the game they will be less likely to play the role of spoiler in the region. With luck China, together with Russia, will function as forces for moderation and pragmatism. One can only hope that MBS, the Iranians and the Syrians have the sense to make the most of the opportunity.

Perhaps the Chinese real estate strategy was inspired by the USA and the way in which real estate developers have played 'slash and burn' in the major cities since the 60s.

It may end up as a West Asian take on 'Ali Baba' capitalism (in S.E. Asia businesses are often fronted by a Malay or Indonesian Muslim, an 'Ali', with a Chinese partner, a 'Baba').

The reconstruction of Ukraine will cost the West nothing. If the Biden Administration is able, the Russian assets seized under the sanctions and the Magnitsky Act will be used to finance the rebuilding, regardless of whether anything gets rebuilt at all.

Portions of the funds will be kicked back to Ukrainian politicians (possibly a government in exile or whoever is left in charge of the rump state, assuming that there is one) and to the NGOs. Commissions will be charged for financial services. Those exposed to the Ukrainian bond market will relieve themselves of their liabilities, which will be assumed by either suckers (taxpayers) or tributaries (foreign banks and taxpayers in allied 'democracies').

The golden rule of foreign aid applies: humanitarians eat first, humanity gets the left-overs and the latter should give thanks that they are not on the menu.

The Irish rate of AI adoption is similar to the Irish per capita GDP: just because a Silicon Valley giant has an office there for tax purposes that represents their EU operations, it doesn't mean much for the average Mick.

Based on those numbers, Ireland would be some ginger Wakanda where everyone drives a Tesla and has Google Glass on their head. In reality, it's more like East Anglia.

Almost all of the framing of the Trump issue is completely illogical. It's pointless to consider whether it's good or bad as it was inevitable at some point. His antagonists were bound to do it as it is their role in walking through a historic script.

Expand full comment

The law does not need logic. Control, money, plus respect from hoi polloi, but not logic. Who better to play the role of mad-dog prosecutor than Alvin Bragg?

It will all become clearer once we see how the judge manages the show-trial. My guess is that he will play his role as impartially as possible on the stuff that counts for his own legal reputation, but with a touch of reluctance to satisfy the anti-Trump camp.

Expand full comment

To show that Brag(g)'s case is a travesty, all one needs to cite is Pelosi's careless admission:

"Trump will have to prove he is innocent."

Any semblance of justice calls for the prosecution proving he is guilty.

Expand full comment

I don't disagree. The case is a travesty and the points that prove that are too numerous to completely list. And unfortunately that's my point. Discussing what is bad about it wastes energy that should be focused on questions such as "what does this mean to me?"

Expand full comment

Pelosi is a witless old whore, perfect for her job in the legislative brothel over which she presides. It is a scandal that anyone who could talk that way gets to participate in making laws in the first place.

The extant charges disregard the relevant statute of limitations. For a meaningful conviction, the prosecution would have to prove intent to commit an as yet unidentified offence, whatever that may be. If the judge has any integrity he should dismiss the case on the grounds that it is a transparently vexatious prosecution in the first place. If a guilty sentence is handed down it is guaranteed to be vacated on appeal. It is obvious that the intent of the prosecutor is to undermine the ability of the Republicans to unseat Biden.

The implications for the US are enormous. Taken with the fraudulent elections of 2020, the theft of the Russian central banks overseas reserves (and those of Afghanistan) the indictment of Trump certainly exposes the US as a gangster state.

My guess is that the Democrats are just gambling on disrupting the elections as much as possible and fortifying the narrative amongst their core supporters who are intoxicated with loathing for Trump. Other players (the Deep State) will instrumentalise the fall-out by using the tit-for-tat prosecutions to target Democrats they need removed.
