One of the cleverest plot points in Crank (2006) was that the girlfriend didn't own a cell phone, so Jason Statham was forced to communicate with her by leaving messages on her answering machine. Then, in Crank 2 (2009), it's revealed that the girlfriend is now the proud owner of an iPhone. Excellent point made by Mary. Everything really did start to go to shit in '07.

Excellent interview of a woman who gets a key issue. I continue to be astonished that opposition to transgenderism has not become the point on which opposition to Woke Progressivism can coalesce. The soul of humanity is at stake yet often too much time and effort is spent on secondary issues. We are well along to losing our humanity and Harrington is correct I think in characterizing British TERFs as Horatius at the bridge. American feminists certainly appear to be doing little or nothing to mount a principled and fierce opposition to this abomination.

On another front, is Harrington really a Steinerian/Waldorf Kid? Waldorf education is deeply weird but for the most part, it's a good kind of weirdness. I do have a conflict of interest as I and my wife, both very conservative politically, had our three kids go to Waldorf schools from Kindergarten through 8th grade. Waldorf kids tend to be interesting very creative but often somewhat ethereal, though I haven't paid close attention to what's been happening to the Waldorf movement for the last 12 years since our youngest finished his elementary education. I fear that the political leanings of the average Waldorf teacher (fairly hard Left) may end up undercutting Steiner's very insightful ideas about childhood education and the rather traditionalist Waldorf curriculum.

Probably the best interview yet. Mary's a terrific character, who along with Roussinous, and Ed West allows UnHerd to remain (barely) respectable.

The statement that people are largely the result of cultural and material inputs hardly qualifies as an insight. Other than that, good interview.

By the way, feminists absolutely need to reap what they've sown, and our only hope is that tranny ideology is the emetic our culture needs to purge itself of the entire Liberation Industrial Complex.

"a handful of radical feminists are Horatius keeping the bridge"

No Honey, you're not. You're talking as they walk over the bridge. They own the bridge, too.

I'm all for military "support" against the monsters.

Then again I'm all for the Taliban program minus Islam, but definitely for their governance.*

So if you want us on the Bridge "Babe" we get to be men again.

Paterfamilias. 1950 doesn't cut it.

In fact Paterfamilias + Reactionary Christianity + some sort of subsidiary Constitutional order works fine.

*Imagine a government with triple levels of anti-corruption and abuse Inspector Generals local, regional, Peshawar Shura [National] that actually FIRED people for corruption and abuse, and on top of that gave the Afghans a hotline number - yes - and yes FIRED abusive or corrupt Taliban leaders, who were also required to work closely with local village elders aka local government.

Oh, and they don't take women seriously - and told the female government workers to stay home when they took over.

Not kidding on the Paterfamilias. Back in your cages, that's enough damage. Or suffer.

"The subset of conservatism that usually gets called ‘post-liberal’ is in most cases tepid social conservatism with a side order of big-state intervention. In other words, largely tweed-wearing Chesterton-pilled hobbit fantasy."

That punched me hard right in the gut...

Perhaps odd to comment after this length of time, but this is my favourite interview. To those who want the feminists to stew in their own juices, I'm getting a 'I study the blade' vibe.

Came back and re-read this interview (you’re a hilarious interviewer, especially in this one), because I just read Harrington’s “The Tyranny of Queer Theory” essay. Thought I’d share my friend’s acidic comments about Harrington and Harrington’s “Queer” article. I don’t agree with it entirely, but it’s well wrought:

Robert,

I don't usually quarrel with your choices, but this lady strikes me as something in very bad taste. I'm glad she's heard of Eros & Agape, that she's further heard of philia, & I'm sure that, being English, she'll soon hear of storge from Lewis's Four loves, but trashing dubious scholarship to show off is not my idea of fun. Such people & their notions of experience or transgression or individuality are a catastrophe waiting to happen; fascination with them, or their success, bespeaks a fondness for perversion that makes politics impossible--after all, their watchword is shamelessness & I fear that, in literary affairs, they feel bad taste is a sign of devotion to that cause. Like you, I don't believe a return to conventions is possible for people who's heart isn't in it, i.e. who have no law. Their convenience is not the same thing; their superiority to the outrageous isn't altogether obvious, either, since they're unserious. UnHerd is the kind of venue for such mediocre creatures, a sorry end to an England that once produced remarkable writers, now populated with imposters who impress Americans, but are no longer able even to aspire to the literary greatness of their forebears. The purpose of such publications is not really to stop the revolution, much less to restore something that could plausibly be called conservative--it's only to lodge complaints on behalf of junior aspirants to notoriety who cannot, forsooth, compete with the outrageous. The ladies that make up the supposed reaction to the ideology propounded by our new oligarchs are a distraction; I suppose we may look at them as histrionic nostalgia; they certainly contribute to the paralysis of our young men.
