Open Thread #13 - Things are Happening
The Nazis were wrong: Work does not "set you free" (to Substack)
This has been a brutally punishing and busy week for me, and it’s not yet over. I will be back on the continent mid-week where I can then play a little catch up with all of you, moving towards the completion of the Early Days of HIV/AIDS series (note how quiet the Monkeypox outbreak has gone in the media), and get back to regularly scheduled programming. Apologies, but I do have other commitments besides those made to you.
EU chief von der Leyden is threatening yet another country if it dares vote the wrong way, so today’s vote in Italy is a tremendous subject to discuss in this open thread, as is the coming annexation by Russia of up to four Ukrainian regions (something that I could never accept, but my feelings are rightfully irrelevant).
Edit: Berlusconi stirring the pot.
Rod Dreher from The American Conservative has joined an increasingly-expanding chorus of notable mainstream writers who are recommending this Substack. This means that what we are doing here is having some impact.
Please note: I am a confirmed and practicing Catholic, of course. I don’t write too often on religious matters as there are many people who do it better than I ever could do. Nor do I like to discuss it online/publicly except in the most rare of circumstances.
I hope to have another London Diary entry up by Tuesday, but we will see. If not, we’ll turn to the other items (and Italy) during this upcoming week.
